    Carpets

If you look after your carpet every day (and clean up spillages and stains quickly) they'll not only look good for longer, but also feel good. Here are a few tips on how you can keep your carpets looking fresher for longer:

    • Regular Cleaning - Carpets should ideally be vacuumed once a day, using a powerful upright vacuum cleaner with a rotary brush head or beater bar.
    • Dealing with Spillages - As we all know, you should remove as much of any spillage/stain as fast as you can. Try laying some absorbent material over the affected area and press down in a blotting motion.
    • Minimise Wear in Busy Areas – On floors where there will be a lot of coming and going (such as entrances and walkways), try using a heavier duty carpet.
    • Planned Maintenance – In most situations, only around 25% of your floor area has to deal with lots of heavy traffic. Therefore, it’s only this area that needs regular cleaning. So with planned maintenance, you can keep the carpet looking fresh at a low cost. The way you clean your carpet, and how often you do it, depends on the type and colour of your carpet, how much traffic it gets, and the type of soiling. With planned maintenance, intensive wall-to-wall cleaning may only be needed once a year.

    Laminates

Laminate flooring always looks good, and it can never go wrong, but to ensure that it keeps its beautiful appearance, proper cleaning is a must. So take a look at a few of the tips we offer, to ensure that you can keep your laminate floor clean and looking fresh:

    • Sweep, sweep, sweep – First things first, sweep your floor. Make sure you remove any sort of dirt, dust or debris from your floor. Be careful not to sweep too hard, or you may scratch your floor.
    • Choose the right equipment – If your floor only has a tiny stain on it, then there’s no need for a mop. Why not try using a soft cloth to blot up spills immediately after they happen or right after you notice them. For tougher stains, try wetting a cloth with nail polish and scrub the stain in a hard, fast motion.
    • What not to use – To prevent damage to your laminate flooring then you should not use any soap based detergents, abrasive cleaners or any other type of cleaner on laminate flooring. There is no need for it, as chemical products will only damage the flooring. Never steam clean your laminate panels.

    Engineered Wood

Engineered Wood Flooring is a beautiful and modern kind of flooring that has the appearance of solid wood, but with greater structural integrity. One advantage to this is that engineered wood flooring is able to deal with changes in temperature much better than that of solid wood. However, as with all floors, there are a few tips and tricks you should follow to ensure it stays in good condition, and looking beautiful:

    • Scratches and Dents – As with any hard flooring, there is the danger of it getting scratched or dented. Avoid contact with abrasive furniture and other items such as stiletto heels. Castors and table legs can be kept from coming into contact with the surface of your flooring with furniture pads. Be sure to keep your wood floors dust free, as a build up of dust may result in lots miniscule scratches due to dust build up.
    • Sand it down – If you wish to remove any sort of blemishes or marks from your wood flooring, then you have the option to sand it down. Although please beware, as this is engineered wood, the top layer of solid wood is much thinner to that of a normal solid wood flooring. So this can only be done a couple of times, whereas if you had a solid wood floor, you can do this as many times as necessary.
    • Spillages – Spillages should and must be removed as quickly as possible. There is always the issue of the effects of water expanding wood. With coloured liquids such as red wine, these liquids are more likely to bed into your flooring if you allow them to dry. If your flooring is lacquered or oiled, then this may give at least some prevention to damage, but be prepared to recoat your flooring if this does wear off.

    Solid Wood

Solid wood floors add warmth, character and a welcoming feel to any home, and best yet, they never go out of style. While solid wood floors are known to last a long time, they can only do this effectively by being given special care and by being treated properly.

    • Scratch Prevention – There are many ways that you can get scratch damage to your floor, the only way around it is by knowing how to prevent it from happening in the first place. Your pets can cause scratches, so if you have any pets it’s best to either keep their claws short, or keep them from entering the room where you have your wood flooring. Furniture pads can also be placed under furniture legs to help prevent scratches and dents.
    • Sand it down – As solid wood is much thicker than the hardwood layer placed upon engineered wood, whenever any sort of blemishes and scratches are noticed on your floor, you have the option to sand it down. With engineered wood you only have a small hardwood layer so you are limited to how much you can sand it down. With solid wood you can do this as much as necessary.
    • Colour Fade – Wood fades in colour, and it is an inevitable occurrence. In order to try and slow this process down, then it’s best to keep your flooring directly out of sunlight. If you are using this flooring in a room where a lot of sunlight is coming through, then consider using curtains or blinds to minimalize how much sunlight comes into contact with your floor. A rug may also help if there is a specific area of sunlight you wish to block.

    Vinyl

Hard wearing, long lasting and waterproof. Vinyl floors are easy to clean and do not require that much maintenance at all. This fact makes it useful in rooms such as your kitchen, bathroom or in any commercial location. Where vinyl flooring may be very efficient, it is not indestructable and there are still some steps that you should follow to ensure your vinyl has a long and happy life. style. While solid wood floors are known to last a long time, they can only do this effectively by being given special care and by being treated properly.

    • Stains and Spills – As you probably know, most spill and stains can be cleaned off a vinyl floor with ease. Though, you still get some of those dreaded marks that become very hard to remove by using simple cleaning methods. In instances where you can’t simply use a wet mop and clean up your mess, there are a variety of products available specifically for cleaning hard stains and marks from vinyl flooring. Try using a mixture of water and bicarbonate of soda.
    • Avoiding Scratching – When you are dealing with those difficult stains (like we just mentioned above) it’s important that you know what you can and cannot scrub your vinyl floors with. Avoid using scouring powder and brillo pads, as this will cause significant scratches and damage to your vinyl floor.
    • Sweep up – If you allow a dust build up on your vinyl flooring, then you always leave yourself open to the possibly of scratch damage. Each dust particle can leave a miniscule scratch on your floor, so the more dust, the more scratches. So make sure you keep your floor dust free by using a mop or sweep on your floor.
    • Take Advantage of Water – With most other floors, you are really limited when it comes to cleaning your flooring as you cannot use water for everything (because of risk of damage etc.) With vinyl flooring, water is your friend. So where vinyl is a lot cheaper than your other flooring types, it offers you a practical alternative that requires minimal amount of care.

    Cushion Floor Vinyl

Has all of the features of your regular vinyl flooring, only with twice the comfort. Cushion floor vinyl is produced in a way that the layer of vinyl flooring absorbs some of the force coming down on it, resulting in a comfier experience for your feet! As the texture of cushion floor vinyl is much softer to that of your everyday vinyl, there are a few things you have to consider when you maintain it.

    • Sweep up – When you are sweeping your floor, make sure you use a brush with a soft bristle broom. By using a soft bristle broom; you are reducing the likelihood of adding scratches to your floor, when you are trying to clean it up.
    • Furniture Protection – Ensure that the legs of all of your furniture has large surface, non-staining floor protectors. This will prevent any damage being caused to your floor from your furniture.
    • No Bleach Allowed – Ensure that you do not use any ammonia or bleach based products on your cushion floor vinyl. This will damage your flooring and completely alter the appearance and texture.

    Rugs

Everybody likes rugs, and rugs add a unique quality to anybody’s home, especially on wood flooring. Here are just a few tips and tricks so that you can keep your rug clean and long lasting

    • No Shoes Policy – Consider adopting a ‘No Shoes’ policy in your home. This will prevent dust and dirt from getting onto your rug from any area of your house, as less dirt is spread around your house.
    • Underlay – Consider using a rug underlay wherever you place your rug, this will prevent any sort of colour transfer onto your existing floor.
